Early Speech and Language Development

Communication is such a fundamental aspect of our children’s development. Did you know your child will develop 80% of their oral language skills before they head into Prep. How do they learn all of this you ask? From you of course, and the environment around them.

Once they start Prep their speech and language skills will also play a big role in how well they develop their reading and writing skills. This makes it even more important to ensure their development is on the right track before they head into school.

If your child is showing some of the following signs then it might be a good idea to consult a speech pathologist:

They are having trouble understanding you, and following simple instructions
They continue to find it hard to understand you even though their hearing is ok
Their speech or language doesn’t seem to be as developed as their age related peers
They feel frustrated because they can’t get their message across
They seem more withdrawn and unwilling to talk as they are becoming aware of their difficulties
Other people such as family or friends have mentioned that it is difficult to understand your child, or your child doesn’t seem to understand them.
